Fox's Second Life Tutorial

Welcome to my tutorial on how to enter the world of Second Life. Before we begin, I have some important disclaimers to make so that we're all on the same page, and that you fully understand what you're getting into. I am not asking you to read this, I am requiring you to read this, before you can see the actual tutorial.

TO PLAY SECOND LIFE, YOU MUST BE AN ADULT, OVER 21 HIGHLY PREFERRED. Second Life is an adult setting, and if you are a minor, I am very sternly telling you to find another virtual world for people your age. If you are an adult under 21 I cannot recommend you play SL, no matter how mature you think you are.

THIS GAME IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. If you are impatient with clunky UI, you will not like SL. If you require your video games to be constantly stimulating and socially bustling, you will not like SL. If you are not comfortable with a userbase that consists of many people over 25, you will not like SL. If kink and BDSM items and themes being present everywhere makes you uncomfortable, you will not like SL. SL is old, clunky, and many areas are completely deserted. People will send you unprompted, often strange or sexual DMs in SL no matter what kind of avatar you wear. I really, truly mean any kind of avatar. There is a reason I am so stern about the age threshold to play this game.

Blocking and derendering will be taught in the Socialization section of this tutorial, but my point is that this game is not a good choice if you have thin skin. It's a hard phenomena to describe, and I can only somewhat liken it to the amount of slurs you'll hear casually thrown around in a game like VRChat, except SL has a tendency to harbor a much more isolated userbase that takes it as seriously as real life. Please, use your discretion.

This tutorial assumes you have some basic familiarity with computers and video games (ie. You know what a HUD is, what an inventory is, you're used to WASD as movement keys, etc).

This tutorial began being constructed in Summer 2024. Not much is anticipated to change over time in this tutorial, but it might become dated quite quickly.

This tutorial is aimed at those who may enjoy making an avatar/roleplaying fantasy themes. This includes avatars that are anime-styled and furries. "Realistic" avatars will be discussed as well, but hyperrealistic roleplay (ie. The Sims) is not the tutorial focus.

People who take the time to read this section will know to click the Abbacchio below to begin the tutorial. There is big text for those who did NOT read because they are too impatient. Please take this disclaimer seriously.

Finally, this tutorial is offered AS-IS. Because I have tried to be as comprehensive as possible, I am not offering additional troubleshooting. Furthermore, this tutorial is not complete at the moment; I am beginning to roll it out by showcasing the most bare bones necessities to understanding SL, and getting more granular from there. Whatever errors you encounter, specifically in regards to avatar components like heads or bodies, should be directed to the in-world support provided for those specific items. Thank you for your understanding.
